2014 Bergen County Champs

Don Bosco (6-5-2) enters the Bergen County Tournament as the top seed and three time defending champion, looking to right the ship after a rough start to 2015, as the Ironmen have gone 1-3-1.  They’ll go up against #10 Mahwah (8-6-1), who defeated #7 Pascack Valley (9-3-4), 2-1 Wednesday night at the Ice Vault.

Looking to build momentum off the slow start to the new year, Bosco’s physical play and goaltending has kept them in tight games of late.  After its 1-0 loss to #1 ranked Delbarton, Head Coach, Greg Toskos spoke to JJ Conrad of the Bergen Record about the Ironmen’s physical play,

“We talked about being physical with them, it was a point of emphasis for us” Toskos said. We knew they are a big, physical team but I thought we matched them well. [Marcus] Gurega, [Ryan] McLinsky, [Joe] Verboys … those guys were throwing awesome, good, clean body checks out there. It was definitely something we stressed coming in.”

Even while the offense has struggled to find its identity against NJ’s top ranked teams, senior forward, Joe Verboys talked about a simpler approach with  JC Hageny of NJ.com,

“We have a great goalie. We just need to start getting some shots on net,” Don Bosco senior forward Joe Verboys said. “Alexei is outstanding game-in and game-out. We need to start helping him out. We’re trying to be too cute out there. We need to get pucks to the net.”

The first ever meeting of the two schools in the Bergen County Tournament takes place Friday 8:00 pm at the Ice Vault in Wayne, NJ.
